Thirty days wrapped in the protection of the man who carried the Son of God through the night.
TLDR
The Holy Cloak Novena is a thirty-day devotion that invokes the protection of St. Joseph under the image of his cloak, the garment that wrapped the Christ Child in Bethlehem and shielded the Holy Family during the flight into Egypt. Each day meditates on one of Joseph's privileges, virtues, or titles, building a spiritual mantle of protection around the person who prays it. It is one of the most comprehensive and beloved Josephite devotions in the Church.
History
The Holy Cloak devotion draws on the ancient tradition of invoking St. Joseph's protection as a covering, a shield, a cloak thrown around the shoulders of the one who asks. The image is drawn from the reality of his life: Joseph was the man who carried a baby through the desert at night, wrapped in his own garment, fleeing a king who wanted to kill them. That cloak, warm from a father's body, pressed against the body of the infant God, is the most powerful symbol of Josephite protection in the Church.
The novena is structured as thirty days, one for each of the approximately thirty years Joseph spent in the presence of Jesus on earth. Each day invokes a different title or privilege from the Litany of St. Joseph and traditional Josephite devotion.
How To Pray
Pray the opening prayer each day, followed by the meditation for that day, followed by the closing prayer. The novena takes approximately five to ten minutes daily.
